Black History in Theater

Event Description:

Students for Justice and Improv This! are collaborating on a presentation from Winthrop professor Melvin McAllister, attendees will be walked through an overview of Black history in the context of theater. The presentation will be about 45 minutes teaching students about the achievements and history of Black actors, directors, and more as well as how Black people were portrayed in theater in the past. For example, minstrel shows. We will also discuss McAllister's upcoming show The Escape; or, A Leap for Freedom and the context and history behind it. Following the presentation will be a short 15 minute Q&A section where students can ask questions about the presentation.
